Glutamate metabolic pathways and retinal function

Glutamate is a major neurotransmitter in the CNS but is also a key metabolite intimately coupled to amino acid production/degradation. We consider the effect of inhibition of two key glutamate metabolic enzymes: glutamine synthetase (GS) and aspartate aminotransferase on retinal function assessed using the electroretinogram to consider photoreceptoral (a-wave) and post-receptoral (b-wave) amplitudes. Quantitative immunocytochemistry was used to assess amino acid levels within photoreceptors, ganglion and Müller cells secondary to GS inhibition.

Retinal metabolic state of the proline-23-histidine rat model of retinitis pigmentosa

We determined the metabolic
changes that precede cell death in the dystrophic proline-23-histidine
(P23H) line 3 (P23H-3) rat retina compared with the normal SpragueDawley (SD) rat retina. Metabolite levels and metabolic enzymes
were analyzed early in development and during the early stages of
degeneration in the P23H-3 retina. Control and degenerating retinas
showed an age-dependent change in metabolite levels and enzymatic
activity, particularly around the time when phototransduction was
activated.

Concerns of anophthalmic patients wearing artificial eyes

Background:  To identify the concerns of experienced artificial eye wearers and investigate whether these had changed since they lost their eye. Design:  A retrospective study of private practice patients. Participants:  Sixty-three experienced artificial eye wearers. Methods:  An anonymous questionnaire was posted to participants. Paired Wilcoxon tests were used to investigate changes to concern levels over time.

The Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator on rough domains

We consider a bounded connected open set Ω ⊂ Rd whose boundary Γ has a finite (d − 1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure. Then we define the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator D0 on L2(Γ) by form methods. The operator −D0 is self-adjoint and generates a contractive C0-semigroup S = (St)t>0 on L2(Γ). We show that the asymptotic behaviour of St as t→1 is related to properties of the trace of functions in H1(Ω) which Ω may or may not have.

A randomized trial of the aldosterone-receptor antagonist eplerenone in asymptomatic moderate-severe aortic stenosis

The aim of the study is to determine whether the selective aldosterone-receptor antagonist eplerenone delays onset of left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction or reduces LV hypertrophy in asymptomatic patients with moderate to severe aortic stenosis.

Female monasticism occupied an incredibly important position in the world of early medieval Francia. Convents, and the women living within them, were key figures in the political, social, cultural and religious history of the Frankish kingdoms. Contemporary sources, from secular histories to saints’ lives to monastic rules are filled with the names of convents and nuns, and recognize their powerful roles in the Frankish world Yet, in modern historiography, early medieval nuns have been marginalized.

The quantity and importance of the historic teahouses to the development of Chengdu is exemplified in the saying "Teahouse is a little Chengdu", Chengdu is a big teahouse. They bear no resemblance to the ceremonial Japanese teahouses. Instead they have the commonness of the çayhane in turkey, busyness of the markets in Spain, and lawlessness of the taverns in Ireland. During 4000 years of isolated development, teahouses of Chengdu became the fundamental unit of life and the only social space for the public of the city.

The liminal: rediscovering value in a journey

Today one arrives at their solution, desire or destination quickly and efficiently, losing the value of the journey and experience of residing in the liminal in-between. In an age of instant knowledge/communication/travel/noodles the liminal is restricted to the landscapes, physically and culturally, that facilitate this rapid transience. This thesis argues that the transience of liminal landscapes are of value as they offer society a reprieve from the drudgery of the everyday.

Planning for sunlight: an exploration of field theory

It is my thesis that the study of the mind has influenced architectural practice. This work serves to demonstrate a parallel development between our understanding of ourselves, as cognizant beings, and the evolving discipline of architecture. By addressing issues with regard to perception, as both a collective and physiological process, I hope to contribute to the potency of field theory in contemporary architectural discourse.
