Utility of the ceftazidime-imipenem antagonism test (CIAT) to detect and confirm the presence of inducible AmpC beta-lactamases among enterobacteriaceae

Detection of AmpC beta-lactamase production by enterobacteria has been problematic. Contrary to ESBLs, no specific guidelines are available for detection and confirmation of AmpC production by clinical relevant microorganisms. Moreover, some bacterial species may produce inducible AmpC beta-lactamases that can be easily overlooked by routine susceptibility tests. We reported here a new test based on the strong inducible effect of imipenem on AmpC genes and the consequent antagonism with ceftazidime.

Community influences on cancer screening behaviors among Mexican immigrant women

Traditionally, Latina immigrants have suffered a disproportionate burden of breast and cervical cancer due to lower mammography and Pap smear screening participation. However, a study of the screening rates of Mexican immigrants living in a Chicago neighborhood revealed that not all immigrant communities exhibit low participation rates. The purpose of this two-phase, mixed-method study was to examine the social context in Little Village (LV) that contributes to women’s high cancer screening rates.

A cross-sectional testing of The Iowa Personality Disorder Screen in a psychiatric outpatient setting

Abstract Background Patients suspected of personality disorders (PDs) by general practitioners are frequently referred to psychiatric outpatient clinics (POCs). In that setting an effective screening instrument for PDs would be helpful due to resource constraints. This study evaluates the properties of The Iowa Personality Disorder Screen (IPDS) as a screening instrument for PDs at a POC. Methods In a cross-sectional design 145 patients filled in the IPDS and were examined with the SCID-II interview as reference.

High content live cell imaging for the discovery of new antimalarial marine natural products

Abstract Background The human malaria parasite remains a burden in developing nations. It is responsible for up to one million deaths a year, a number that could rise due to increasing multi-drug resistance to all antimalarial drugs currently available. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the discovery of new drug therapies. Recently, our laboratory developed a simple one-step fluorescence-based live cell-imaging assay to integrate the complex biology of the human malaria parasite into drug discovery.

Screening for type 2 diabetes in general practice

The presented studies were conducted within the framework of the international ADDITION study (Anglo-Danish-Dutch Study of Intensive Treatment in People with Screen-Detected Diabetes in Primary Care), a randomised controlled trial in 3,057 screen-detected type 2 diabetic patients. The aim of ADDITION is to evaluate whether screening for type 2 diabetes in general practice is feasible and subsequent intensified, multifactorial treatment beneficial. Intensified treatment consisted of pharmacological treatment combined with lifestyle education.

Future Urban Screens - New Concepts for Urban Screens

Various projects showed recently that the passers-by in public space suffer a lack of attention to public screens regardless their sizes and content. Two recently developed concepts show on the basis of examples possible ways to grab people's attention by using new ways of interaction or new points of view. The screens in "Urban Moves" use cameras and information technology to directly interact with the passers-by whereas the concept "Urban SubScreens" deals with new ideas to place screens and let people choose how to interact.
