Relative importance of natural cues and substrate morphology for settlement of the New Zealand Greenshell™ mussel, Perna canaliculus

Production from aquaculture of the New Zealand Greenshell™ mussel, Perna canaliculus, is worth more than US$190 M annually. However, expansion of the industry is currently limited by the number of naturally occurring seed available for growout. Previous work suggests that natural chemical cues and settlement surface topography may be important factors in the settlement and retention of P. canaliculus larvae. This study investigated the effects both of these factors separately and in conjunction on the settlement of P. canaliculus larvae under laboratory conditions.

An Attributional Analysis of Reactions to Poverty: The Political Ideology of the Giver and the Perceived Morality of the Receiver

An attributional analysis of reactions to poverty is presented. The article begins by discussing the perceived causes of poverty and their taxonomic properties (locus, stability, and controllability). One antecedent of causal beliefs, political ideology, is then examined in detail, followed by a review of the effects of causal beliefs on emotions and behavior. It is contended that helping the poor is a moral issue, but the moral evaluation concerns the targeted recipient of aid rather than the potential help giver.

A general modeling method for I-V characteristics of geometrically and electrically configured photovoltaic arrays

A general method for modeling typical photovoltaic (PV) arrays and modules is proposed to find the exact current and voltage relationship of PV arrays or modules of geometrically and electrically different configurations. Nonlinear characteristic equations of electrical devices in solar array or module systems are numerically constructed without adding any virtual electrical components. Then, a robust damped Newton method is used to find exact I–V relationship of these general nonlinear equations, where the convergence is guaranteed.
